Great learning experiences have the power to change how we think about ourselves, our relationships with others, and our role in the world. At Opportunity Education, we strive to create experiences that promote student agency and active, skills-forward learning. Often this requires both students and teachers to shift mindsets, or self-perceptions. Oneâs mindset about their role in learning can profoundly affect learning, skill development, relationships, achievement in school, and success in other areas of life Dweck, 2008. There are two kinds of mindsets we focus on growth mindset and outward mindset. A person with a growth mindset believes that they are always capable of learning and improving, and that intelligence is not static. Unlike someone with a fixed mindset, they see effort as the key to their success and work hard to improve and learn Dweck, 2008. A person with a growth mindset does not get discouraged when they receive feedback, nor do they take feedback personally. For them, challenges are opportunities. Practicing an outward mindset can be powerful too Arbinger Institute, 2016. Someone with an outward mindset frequently asks about other people in their lives Why is this person responding this way? What do they need to be successful? What can I do to help them be successful? This is in direct opposition to thinking inwardly about oneâs own needs and problems. Having an outward mindset is helpful when working with others, empathizing, responding to group needs, and leading effectively. Having an outward mindset is not about being nice or dropping everything to help others; it involves thinking about other people and their needs, even if you are not in a position to help. This perspective will help you improve your own attitude and the ways in which you collaborate to achieve shared goals. These mindsets might remind you of Opportunity Educationâs skills and habits, and that is not by coincidence. The Learning Skills and Essential Habits incorporate these mindsets. For example, Learn from Setbacks relates to growth mindsetâbelieving you can improve and taking actions to do so, tackling setbacks or challenges head on, and receiving feedback well. Communicate Openly, Take a Position, and Collaborate require an outward mindsetâunderstanding other peopleâs perspectives and circumstances, empathizing, and helping others. As role models, you can help young people develop these mindsets. An important first step is talking to students and children about these mindsets, and making them aware of their own thinking. Here are a few strategies for developing an outward mindset Ask others what they need and how you can help them. When frustrated with some elseâs actions, ask yourself why they might be acting that way. Be present and listen to others. Focus on what you can give, rather than what you can get, from a person or situation. Here are some ways to model a growth mindset Share your own personal learning goals, as well as what you are working on, in order to improve. Also help others identify challenging, yet realistic, goals and the strategies for reaching those goals. Be transparent about mistakes and setbacks. Identify what actions you took to address the situations. Verbalize positive thinking. Instead of saying, âIâm not good at this,â say something like, âThis is really hard for me. I need to keep working on it.â Repeat these thoughts out loud to model positive self-talk. Recognize and celebrate effort and hard work, not just success. Try new things! Mindset adalah pola pikir yang dapat menentukan keberhasilan atau kesuksesan seseorang. Dengan memahami mindset, seseorang dapat mengenali dan memahami diri sendiri. Untuk itu, sangat penting untuk mengetahui bagaimana mindset mempunyai andil besar bagi kehidupan adalah terkait dengan cara pandang seseorang tentang kehidupannya. Mindset bisa menjadi penentu seseorang bisa atau tidak dalam menghadapi situasi apa pun. Pola pikir ini yang nantinya akan memengaruhi cara berpikir dan berperilaku dalam situasi apa orang masih terjebak dengan pemikiran bahwa kecerdasan atau bakat adalah sesuatu yang dimiliki sejak lahir. Padahal, kecerdasan dan bakat bisa dikembangkan seiring berjalannya waktu dan upaya. Hal itu yang kemudian diurai dalam sebuah apa sebenarnya yang dimaksud dengan mindset dan bagaimana cara pembentukannya? Mindset adalah kumpulan pola pikir yang membentuk keyakinan untuk berpikir memahami semua aspek. Mindset memengaruhi pandangan dan cara seseorang dalam mengambil sebuah keputusan. Sederhananya, mindset adalah keyakinan yang mengarahkan cara seorang individu menangani suatu mengenai mindset pertama kali dikemukakan oleh Psikolog Universitas Stanford, Carol Dweck pada 2006. Dweck membandingkan keyakinan yang berbeda tentang dari mana kemampuan orang berasal. Menurutnya, keyakinan memiliki peran penting dalam apa yang diinginkan dan apakah keinginan itu akan dan rekan-rekannya lebih dari 30 tahun lalu menjadi tertarik dengan sikap siswa tentang kegagalan. Mereka memperhatikan bahwa beberapa siswa bangkit kembali, sementara siswa lain tampak hancur bahkan oleh kemunduran melakukan beberapa penelitian, Carol memberikan bukti bahwa kunci cara berpikir, merasa, dan berperilaku bukan tentang kemampuan, tetapi keyakinan orang tentang kemampuan mereka. Namun dengan memiliki growth mindset pola pikir pertumbuhan yang benar, insya Allah bisa mengatasi segala macam hambatan dan tantangan yang salah satu pola pikir atau mindset yang terpenting dalam mengatasi persoalan yang muncul dalam perjalanan menuju kesuksesan seseorang adalah pola pikir pertumbuhan growth mindset. Dari banyak kajian mengenai psikologi manusia, ditemukan bahwa manusia memiliki potesi tumbuh dan berkembang, bukan hanya fisiknya, namun juga pemikiran, mental dan demikian, jika seseorang telah mengadopsi suatu pola pikir bahwa masalah akan selalu ada dalam perjalanan menuju kesuksesannya, namun sekaligus juga menjadi peluang bagi dirinya untuk tumbuh dan berkembang, maka dia seakan telah mempersiapkan dirinya untuk mampu mengatasi berbagai persoalan yang akan muncul di jalan menuju sukses pasti mengandung banyak persoalan. Bahkan jalan yang lurus-lurus saja, tampaknya nol hambatan, justru bisa menghantarkan pada bahaya, bahkan kehancuran. Ingatlah bagaimana Nokia yang dikenal sebagai produsen HP nomor satu dunia pada tahun 90-an justru hilang tidak berbekas eksistensinya pada saat HP Android muncul dan mengalahkannya pada tahun Nokia bisa mengalami hal seperti itu? Barangkali bisa kita amati dari salah satu pernyataan Nokia yang terkenal, âKami tidak melakukan kesalahan apa pun. Tiba-tiba saja kami kalah dan punah.â Hal ini seolah-olah menunjukkan, Nokia mungkin tidak pernah bermasalah sehingga tidak merasa perlu belajar dan mengasah kemampuan dirinya untuk terus tumbuh dan sebuah kutipan quote dari Frank A. Clark yang mengatakan, âIf you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesnât lead anywhere.â Artinya kurang lebih, âJika Anda menempuh jalan yang tidak memiliki hambatan apa pun, kemungkinan besar tidak akan menghantarkan Anda ke mana pun.âUbah Pola Pikir Supaya BerhasilBanyak faktor yang menentukan kesuksesan seseorang. Entah faktor lingkungan, keluarga dan makanan pada otak manusia yang setiap hari pastinya bertambah. Ada beberapa slogan yang berkata; âNew Mindset, New Result.â yang berarti pemikiran yang baru akan menjadikan hasil yang baru akan sedikit membahas tentang beberapa pemikiran orang-orang sukses. Apakah pemikiran mereka sama seperti pemikiran orang awam seperti kita? Komplekskah? Atau sebaliknya, lebih simple dari pada pemikiran sebagian besar orang?Pola pikir seorang dengan orang lainnya pasti berbeda, namun ada beberapa aspek yang seragam dalam pikiran orang-orang sukses, antara lain;BertumbuhKetika semua orang takut kehilangan apa yang ia miliki, sebaliknya, orang sukses berpikir berbeda. Mereka justru berpikir mendapatkan sesuatu lebih banyak untuk dirinya sendiri. Ini adalah salah satu alasan mengapa orang kaya akan menjadi semakin kaya adalah karena mereka fokus dengan pertumbuhan mereka Diri SendiriOrang sukses membuat sebuah komitmen yang condong kepada diri sendiri dari pada ke orang lain. Ini adalah salah satu hal yang berkaitan dengan mengikuti segala yang mereka katakan, itu akan membuat mereka dapat diandalkan. Sebagian besar manusia membuat komitmen dengan menipu diri sendiri. Kebalikannya, orang sukses tidak yang JelasBertanyalah pada orang biasa, âApakah yang di inginkan dalam hidup ini? Mengapa mereka bekerja sangat keras?â. Orang-orang awam tidak akan spontan memberikan alasan. Mereka akan berpikir dahulu baru menjawab, jawabannya pun klasik. Namun berbeda dengan orang sukses, mereka akan memberi jawaban yang jelas dengan spesifik, dan akan menjelaskan tanpa henti tanpa berpikir Jawab yang BesarBerbeda dengan orang biasa yang cenderung membebani orang lain dan menyalahkan diri sendiri karena kesalahannya, orang sukses akan mengambil semua tanggung jawab yang mereka rasa mereka bisa tiap tanggung jawab yang diambil, pastinya ada resiko yang terjadi. Jika sesuatu hal terjadi, kemungkinan besar ini adalah salah dari diri mereka sendiri. Dengan melakukan hal tersebut, mereka sering membebani diri sendiri, namun mereka akan lebih sering belajar untuk mengatasi setiap masalah dalam kehidupan mereka. Dalam pemikirannya; âAku yang mengendalikan diriku sendiri. & aku akan mewujudkannya jika hal tersebut tidak terjadi dengan sendirinya.âMenjadi Seseorang yang PositifIni adalah salah satu hal yang terpenting dan faktor terbesar dalam pemikiran/ mindset yang harus dimiliki seorang yang sukses. Jika kegagalan terjadi, mereka memiliki kemampuan untuk bangkit lagi, dan memiliki pikiran terbuka dengan hati yang mudah menerima keadaan. Pesimis dan berpikiran negatif tidak akan menjadikan suasana menjadi lebih baik, bahkan menjadi lebih pandangan orang sukses, hidup mereka akan lebih baik jika berpikir positif dan yang kita tanam dalam diri itulah yang akan muncul, seperti halnya negatif dan positif, jika kita menanam hal yang positif maka yang muncul adalah sesuatu hal yang positif Takut untuk MencobaOrang sukses sendiri tidak akan takut untuk mencoba. Banyak sekali perbedaan pandangan orang tua zaman dulu dan sekarang. Contohnya saja dalam hal pendidikan; orang tua zaman dulu berharap anaknya dapat belajar dengan giat dan rajin agar nilai lebih baik, karena nilai adalah salah satu faktor dari kesuksesan. Namun orang zaman sekarang berpikir, jika anak hanya perlu ijazah untuk menjadi sukses karena anak yang pintar akan mengetahui zaman sekarang lebih takur mencoba sesuatu hal yang baru karena mereka tidak berani mengambil resiko yang ada. Namun tidak ada yang namanya kesuksesan tanpa adanya kegagalan. Beliau merupakan pendiri Kentucky Fried Chicken KFC. Sebelum nama KFC sendiri menjadi tren dan favorit banyak kalangan saat ini, kisah dibaliknya pun sangat menarik untuk belajar dari 1 sosok ini, beliau memulai pekerjaannya di usia 10 tahun menjadi seorang buruh tani. Hal tersebut dilakukan Colonel karena ayahnya mengalami patah tulang hingga merambat pada penyakit lainnya yang menyebabkan akhirnya meninggal sehingga ibunya yang menjadi tulang punggung sulung dari 3 bersaudara ini pun gagal dalam pendidikannya. Ia terpaksa keluar dari sekolah pada kelas 7 Setara dengan SMP kelas 1. Pada usia beranjak 13 tahun, ia memilih untuk pergi untuk bekerja menjadi tukang cat. Ia berpindah pekerjaan lagi menjadi seorang buruh tani kembali pada sebuah perternakan. Hal ini tidak menutup semangatnya. Ia tidak sama sekali terintimidasi dengan masalalunya, tidak menyalahkan salah satu sumber, Colonel Sanders juga pernah ditolak dalam pekerjaannya. Ia sempat mencoba melamar pada sebuah restoran cepat saji juga ditolak. 1009 kali merupakan jumlah penolakan yang diterimanya. Jumlah yang banyak ini pun tetap tidak membuat kolonel menjadi proses pembangunan KFC sendiri, kolonel juga sebanyak 2x harus menutup bisnisnya ini, ada dari kejadian kebakaran lokasi, perang dunia ke 2 pada perintisan salah satu restoran makanan favorit kita KFC. Pastinya setelah 50 tahun berproses dan mencoba beberapa pekerjaan, merasakan penolakan, dan pendidikan yang kegigihan, tidak takut ditolak, tidak terpuruk, berani mengambil tanggung jawab, memiliki tujuan yang jelas telah membawa Colonel Sanders menjadi sukses. A person may be able to change their actions for a short period of time but without a mindset shift, a sustained change is much more challenging. In fact, a study from 2016 and updated in 2021 found that less than 10% of people who made New Yearâs resolutions felt content with their results at the end of the year! Before diving into resolutions, behaviors we want to change, habits we want to break and activities we want to accomplish, it is necessary to start with our mindset. The importance of mindset not only applies to New Yearâs resolutions, but also to everyday actions we take as leaders. While the skillset of leadership is important, focusing your professional development solely on the words and actions of a leader will only take you so far. For example, you can get training on conflict resolution, decision making, feedback and more, but if your mindset is still focused on the customer first, your team can feel the difference. Having the mindset of a people-first leader will help you become the leader you want to be. In addition, Harvard Business Review noted that leaders who consistently display patience see their employees' creativity, collaboration and productivity increase. If patience can have this much of an impact on employee performance, how else can a leaderâs mindset create such a positive change? Letâs take a look. The Curious Mind Leaders do not need to be experts in all areas of their field. A true leader does not assume that they have all the answers and is intentional about pursuing things with a beginnerâs mindset. Curiosity is about obtaining new knowledge, not pursuing another opportunity to share your thoughts and perspectives. A curious leader is also able to suspend their preconceived notions so that they can truly listen and be open to feedback, observations and advice. By intentionally demonstrating a curious mind, leaders build the teamâs critical thinking and promote an environment of creativity and collaboration. The Grateful Mind The best leaders are always grateful and no matter what challenges they face, they look for the silver lining of the storm cloud. Within the unavoidable moments of trial and error, a grateful leader is able to recognize that failure is an opportunity for growth, learning and improvement. Leaders who fully embody gratefulness are also able to share this gratitude with others; this modeling and leading by example can be extremely impactful. Setting your intention toward gratitude invites others to do the same. The business becomes a place where small wins are celebrated along with the big ones. The team recognizes and appreciates the value of others. When those thoughts of gratitude are expressed, team members are more likely to push themselves to be even better. The Humble Mind Arrogance rarely yields benefits and yet it is so easy for some leaders to fall into this limiting mindset. Driven by personal ego, leaders make decisions in their own best interest and the team can see it. Overconfidence can prevent the acceptance of ideas and opinions outside of our own. It is antithetical to the Curious Mind and so limits curiosity. Leaders who embrace hubris are quick to blame others when things fall apart and may not be willing or able to take ownership of their role in the situation. A humble leader is secure in who they are and who they are not. They value awareness and acceptance of how things are and are not afraid to take responsibility. A humble mind allows you to recognize your mistakes and builds a learning culture in your organization where mistakes are seen as opportunities to get better. The Willing Mind Leaders with a willing mind are able to face challenging situations head-on. They know that avoidance will allow problems to fester under the surface until they eventually rear their ugly head. It can be uncomfortable, but tackling a problem head-on is usually the most effective and easiest way to move forward. When you demonstrate your willingness to lean in, even when things get tough, your team will follow your lead. Instead of a team that hides things from the leader, the willing leader demonstrates that it is okay to speak up even when things are tough. Your willingness to tackle the uncomfortable creates a level of safety for others to speak their mind and have a different opinion. That willingness to speak up can save money, time and even save lives. In 2022, increase your chances of having that transformation you seek for yourself, your team and your business. If you desire to become a better manager or earn that big promotion, you need to start cultivating the mind of a leader. Start with the mindset of a people-first leader. As Maya Angelou is often credited for saying, âPeople will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." What Is a Mindset? Your mindset is a set of beliefs that shape how you make sense of the world and yourself. It influences how you think, feel, and behave in any given situation. It means that what you believe about yourself impacts your success or failure. According to Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, your beliefs play a pivotal role in what you want and whether you achieve it. Dweck has found that it is your mindset that plays a significant role in determining achievement and success. Mindsets can influence how people behave in a wide range of situations in life. For example, as people encounter different situations, their mind triggers a specific mindset that then directly impacts their behavior in that situation. Fixed vs. Growth Mindsets According to Dweck, there are two basic mindsets fixed and growth. If you have a fixed mindset, you believe your abilities are fixed traits and therefore can't be changed. You may also believe that your talent and intelligence alone lead to success, and effort is not required. On the flip side, if you have a growth mindset, you believe that your talents and abilities can be developed over time through effort and persistence. People with this mindset don't necessarily believe that everyone can become Einstein or Mozart just because they try. They do, however, believe that everyone can get smarter or more talented if they work at it. Here are some fixed vs. growth mindset examples. Fixed Mindset Growth Mindset Either Iâm good at it or Iâm not. I can learn to do anything I want. That's just who I am. I can't change it. I'm a constantly evolving work in progress. If you have to work hard, you don't have the ability. The more you challenge yourself, the smarter you become. If I donât try, then I wonât fail. I only fail when I stop trying. Dweck's research reveals two primary sources praising and labeling, both of which occur in early childhood. The Impact of Praise In a landmark series of experiments, Dweck and her colleagues found that kids behaved very differently depending on the type of praise they received. They found that personal praise, or praising a childâs talents or labeling them as âsmart," promotes a fixed mindset. It sends a message to a child that they either have an ability or they don't, and that there is nothing they can do to change that fact. Process praise, on the other hand, emphasizes the effort a person puts in to accomplish a task. It implies their success is due to the effort and the strategy they used, both of which they can control and improve over time. Hereâs an example of how theyâre different. If your child gets a good grade on a math test, personal praise might be, âSee, you are good at math. You got an A on your test.â Process praise, on the other hand, might sound like this âIâm impressed by how hard you studied for your math test. You read the material over several times, asked your teacher to help you figure out the tricky problems, and tested yourself on it. That really worked!â Adults can take steps to ensure that their children develop growth mindsets by praising efforts not results. By focusing on the process rather than the outcome, adults can help kids understand that their efforts, hard work, and dedication can lead to change, learning, and growth both now and in the future. The Impact of Labels Labeling, which involves assigning people characteristics based on stereotypes or associations with different groups, can also lead to the development of fixed or growth mindsets. A person who holds a stereotype that girls are bad at math or that boys are bad at reading may form a fixed mindset about their own abilities in those specific domains. For example, researchers have found that just having students check boxes about sex and race was enough to invoke internalized stereotypes that affected test performance. The Impact of Mindset Your mindset plays a critical role in how you cope with life's challenges. When a child has a growth mindset, they tend to have a hunger for learning and a desire to work hard and discover new things. This often translates into academic achievement. As adults, these same people are more likely to persevere in the face of setbacks. Instead of throwing in the towel, adults with a growth mindset view it as an opportunity to learn and grow. On the other hand, those with fixed mindsets are more likely to give up in the face of challenging circumstances. In her book "Mindset The New Psychology of Success," Dweck writes that those with fixed mindsets are constantly seeking the validation to prove their worth not just to others, but also to themselves. Every situation calls for a confirmation of their intelligence, personality, or character. Every situation is evaluated Will I succeed or fail? Will I look smart or dumb? You can't just acquire talent for things like music, writing, art, or working hard, and practicing new skills are all ways to develop new talents and abilities. If you tend to agree most with statements 1, 2, and 5, then you probably have a more fixed mindset. If you agree most with statements 3, and 4, 6, however, then you probably tend to have a growth mindset. How to Unfix a Fixed Mindset While people with a fixed mindset might not agree, Dweck suggests that people are capable of changing their mindsets. Here's how. Focus on the journey. An important factor when building a growth mindset is seeing the value in your journey. When you're fixated on the end result, you miss out on all the things you could be learning along the way. Incorporate "yet." If you're struggling with a task, remind yourself that you just havenât mastered it âyet.â Integrating this word into your vocabulary signals that despite any struggles, you can overcome anything. Pay attention to your words and thoughts. Replace negative thoughts with more positive ones to build a growth mindset. Take on challenges. Making mistakes is one of the best ways to learn.
